Open Cup 2025: Round One Results for USASA Teams

In this year’s Open Cup, 13 different USASA-affiliated teams competed in the first round. Here’s a breakdown of each first round match.

 

New York Shockers (NPSL) vs. Hartford Athletic (3/18)

Heading into the match with a small bench, the New York Shockers had a hard fight ahead as they faced off with Hartford Athletic. They struggled offensively but put up a strong defensive battle as they held Hartford to only 3 conceeded goals and end the match with a 3-0 loss.

Naples United FC (NPSL) vs. Miami FC (3/18)

Miami FC took control very early on, but both teams struggled to pull together offensive attacks for a portion of the match. After conceeding four unanswered goals, Naples did manage to secure a goal in the final moments of the match, proving they never stopped working to get off a noteworthy attack. The match ended in a 4-1 loss of Naples United FC.

FC Motown (NPSL) vs. Westchester SC (3/18)

Motown faced off with an excited newcomer in Westchester SC. With the match coming down to a late-game penalty, every minute of the match was very hard fought. Unfortunately for FC Motown, that penalty was enough for Westchester to secure a 1-0 victory, despite responding with a few near equalizers in response.

West Chester United SC (USLPA) vs. Loudoun United FC (3/18)

West Chester United managed to make the first move and take an early 1-0 lead, but it wasn’t long before that was matched by their opponents. Loudoun took a 3-1 lead midway through the second half, and West Chester couldn’t do enough to respond with more than one goal, even though their attacks never waivered. The match ended with a 3-2 loss for West Chester United.

Appalachian FC (NPSL) vs. One Knoxville SC (3/19)

The match kicked off pretty evenly amongst both sides, until Knoxville took the lead 1-0 heading into the half. Despite their dedicated fight through the final minutes of the match, Appalachian conceeded two more goals in the second half, and the match ended with a 3-0 loss.

Virginia Dream (VSSL) vs. Richmond Kickers (3/19)

Managing our first ‘Cupset’ amongst the USASA teams, Virginia Dream appeared victorious. The two Virginian teams were tied at half, but it was going to take a lot more than that to keep Virginia Dream from running away with this match. The Dream came out on top with two more goals in second half of the match, making it a 3-1 win.

El Farolito (NPSL) vs. Real Monarchs (3/19)

Heading into this match as the underdog, odds are El Farolito were improperly underestimated. While Real Monarchs dominated in possession, El Farolito is the one who managed to strike first and take the lead. Tied at the end of regulation, the match moved into extra time and El Farolito took advantage of their opponents playing a man down. Scoring two more in extras, El Farolito took home a 3-1 win.

Inter San Francisco (SFSFL) vs. Monterey Bay FC (3/19)

ISF was certainly the underdog heading into this match, but they managed to give their all in a tough matchup. With Monterey taking a 3-0 lead at half and dominating with 65% of possession, San Francisco had a tough battle to fight. Monterey put one more in the back of the net and handed Inter San Francisco a 4-0 loss.

FC Arizona (NPSL) vs. LAFC 2 (3/19)

LAFC came out strong against NPSL’s FC Arizona and scored in the first few minutes of the match with a few more to follow. FC Arizona managed to slip one past the keeper, but it didn’t prove to be enough in a dominant 7-1 match in favor of LAFC, leaving FC Arizona with a devastating loss.

CD Faialense (BSSL) vs. Portland Hearts of Pine (3/20)

Early in the match, Portland made the first strike and took an early lead with a possession dominance to match. While down 2-0 heading into the half, CD Faialense was far from being out of this match. They came out of the gates quick and put Portland under pressure as much as they could. However, Portland managed two more goals to give CD Faialense a 4-0 loss.

Duluth FC (NPSL) vs. Forward Madison FC (3/20)

Falling down early to a 10-man field, Duluth FC had a hard task ahead. Holding Madison to a 1-0 lead heading into the half, Duluth managed to play a strong defensive game. As the second half went underway, Duluth delivered an equalizer to show they weren’t going away without a fight. However, Madison delivered four more before the match ended in a 5-1 loss for Duluth FC.

NY Pancyprian Freedoms (APSL) vs. FC Cincinnati 2 (3/20)

Our three-time champions came out with the hopes of continuing their journey to their fourth title. While battling their way to a 0-0 finish of regulation, they went into extra time with FC Cincinnati. Remaining a scoreless game after extra time, they headed into kicks from the mark where the Pancyprian Freedoms came out on top 5-4 in kicks and advancing to the next round.

Washington AC (SRATS) vs. Tacoma Defiance (3/20)

Washington managed to take an early lead in this match as they found they back of the net off of a free kick. Tacoma followed that before the half was over with an equalizer goal to make it 1-1. Tacoma took an early lead in the second half and continued to dominate the attack, forcing Washington to fall to the defensive. Tacoma walked away victorious as Washington was left with a 3-1 loss.
