May 17, 2026: The Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer, Honor the Rat City FC Soccer Club

Mario Valdarama, of Rat City FC, a member of the Evergreen Premier League Washington’s Championship Division and WSSA, saw his youth club recognized ahead of the March 16 match between Seattle Sounders FC and Los Angeles FC.

“This award means a lot to our club because it is recognition that organizations like the RAVE Foundation, Seattle Sounders FC and Seattle Reign FC are paying attention to the work we are doing in our community,” Valdarama said. “Our mission of free soccer is something beautiful, but at the same time, it is very difficult because we operate with fewer resources than many other clubs.

Even with those challenges, we strongly believe in what we do. We believe in the service we provide, and we know we are impacting lives and making a positive difference in our community.”The ceremony took place prior to kickoff at what marked the Sounders’ final home match before the upcoming World Cup break. The recognition highlighted the continued growth of youth soccer programs in the Seattle region and the impact local clubs have made on player development and community engagement.

“Congratulations to Mario and recognition for his work in developing a strong soccer culture in the Seattle area,” EPLWA President Tim Busch said. “My long-term goal is to establish a foothold for the WSASA in the Seattle area in conjunction with Mario Valdarama.” The acknowledgment marked a meaningful moment for the Rat City FC organization and reflected broader efforts to strengthen soccer culture across the Seattle area. Valdarama’s work in youth development continues to draw attention as local programs expand opportunities for young athletes.

A Footnote – from Sandy Hunt, a Washington Referee legend lives in the White Center neighborhood and works with the Rat City to develop young referees. Here is her response to Rat City Youth being recognized by the Sounders:

Thank you for the forward Tim. Thursdays we continue to hold our officiating sessions along with the White Center Heights Elementary soccer program for the neighborhood kids learning to play after school. This includes a program to develop coaches as well as players and officials.

The referees are allowed to register for free for their first year thanks to our State Referee Committee.

Coach Mario holds a free training for local players every Saturday, at 5pm at Steve Cox park in White Center. There is a lot of positive community involvement around our game, here in White Center!

Congratulations to everyone who is doing their part!

Warm Regards – Sandy
